About The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites

What is the Most Beautiful Swedish Websites?

The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites (SW³K) is, at heart, a love letter to the World Wide Web. This fascinating medium which, 36 years after its invention by Tim Berners-Lee, continues to house both the personal and the commercial, the experimental and the professional.

Without the web we would not have had later commercial successes (or dystopias?) such as social media, big tech — or, for that matter, large language models. At the same time, the web continues to invite an endless exploration of how text and image can be presented in something as simple as a rectangle.

SW³K is a digital catalogue of nine websites from 2021 to 2024, selected by an expert jury. What they all share is their exceptional level of design. The websites were recognised at an award ceremony at Pauli Café at the Royal Dramatic Theatre on 4 September 2025, followed by an afterparty at restaurant Frippe, arranged by Doberman’s Designbaren.

Initiator

The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites was initiated by Peter Ström, senior lecturer in visual communication at Beckmans College of Design (and a web designer since 1995).

The project’s question starts from the possibilities of archiving and preserving digital design over time.

Jury

A distinguished jury has selected nine Swedish websites from 2021–2024, all of exceptional design quality.

Johanna Lundberg
Digital design director at Kurppa Hosk and guest teacher at Beckmans College of Design.

Adam Arinbjarnarson
Designer at Snøhetta (Oslo) and a Beckmans alumnus.

John Bengtsson
Digital designer, Beckmans alumnus, part of the DJ duo Tiara Networks and guest teacher at Beckmans College of Design.

Anna Sagström
Senior art director at Brand Union, formerly a textile artist, gallerist (Minibar) and record-label manager (Country Music), essayist and guest teacher at Beckmans College of Design.

Is The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites really needed?

The starting point of The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites has been an inquiry into the conditions for preserving digital design over time, from technical, visual and cultural perspectives. The conclusion is that there is a gap in Swedish design history when it comes to digital design. Its immaterial nature makes it hard to archive, and it has rarely been given the same value as other design fields (for example product design, fashion design or graphic design), and perhaps for that reason has lacked the confidence to see itself as part of our design history.

Printed graphic design — or, more specifically, book design — remains in the collective design history through the award Svensk bokkonst, founded in 1933, which each year appoints an expert jury to select 25 books that represent exceptional design that year. These then exist at the National Library of Sweden as part of its remit as Sweden’s national library.

This method and structure for preservation over time has influenced The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites. Instead of collecting in physical form, the nine websites are given the chance to be preserved in a test environment of Kulturarw³. Kulturarw³ is an initiative from the National Library of Sweden to save the Swedish web, in existence since 1997. More about Kulturarw³ can be read here.

One of the aims of The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites is to give digital design the same status as other design disciplines. The recognition and the archiving will, hopefully, help raise its value and make possible a future look back at what could be considered good digital design in 2025.

What does design (excellence) mean?

Exceptional design in this case means that the people behind the websites understand, challenge and explore the medium, care for the details, and that the website holds a high and inventive aesthetic standard.

What does Swedish mean?

The Most Beautiful Swedish Websites has started from existing formulations of national scope in comparable contexts and adapted them to the conditions of a web production. For a website to qualify for the selection, at least one of the following criteria must be met:
— The client is based in Sweden
— The designer is based in Sweden
— The designer is Swedish
— The main language of the website is Swedish

Thanks to

Thanks to Beckmans College of Design, the National Library of Sweden, Adam, Johanna, Anna and John on the jury for an invaluable effort and for being co-brainstormers, Designbaren (especially Nanna and Erin) for hosting the ceremony, Jonas Isfält / Fuzzy Logic Press, Letters from Sweden and Stefania Malmsten for the typeface Tid, Maria Ben Saad and Eric Ericson for supervision, and of course Tim Berners-Lee for inventing the World Wide Web.
